Our Women’s empowerment volunteering program in India contributes towards gender equality, by giving women in India access to education, health awareness, income generation, and soft skill education or training through which they can develop self-worth and secure a better future for themselves. We run this rewarding volunteer program in Kolkata, North India with local partners helping women from slum areas, trafficking or in the sex trade. In South India, our volunteer program is in Cochin, Kerala where we help women from conservative and poor slum areas to help them with education and soft skills training. Both locations offer great volunteering as well as travel experiences.

Our Women’s empowerment program contributes towards gender equality, by giving women in India access to education, health awareness and income generation skills through which they can develop self-worth and secure a better future for themselves and their families.

48% of India’s population is female and gender inequality is part of society especially among the marginally poor.  Domestic violence in India is endemic and widespread predominantly against women. India is ranked at 101 among 136 countries that were assessed for women empowerment on social, economic and political parameters. The stats are alarming with :

  • 70% of women in India are victims of domestic violence.
  • A crime against a women is committed every three minutes
  • A women is raped every 29 minutes
  • A dowry death occurs every 77 minutes
  • one case of cruelty committed by either the husband or relative of the victim occurs every nine minutes.
  • Around 100 million women and girls are estimated to be victim of human trafficking and
  •  44.5 percent of girls are married before the age of 18

These statistics led us to start volunteering programs focused on helping women who are in weaker section of society. With the help of volunteers we are able to provide Spoken English class, life skill development classes and healthcare awareness programs. Through this we hope to give women power to build safe and independent lives for themselves, and live with confidence.

When you join the women empowerment program with us you can expect to volunteer in local girls schools, community centers or local charities to assist with English language classes, life coaching as well as conducting health workshops and soft skill development such as computer training.

Many ladies who attend our sessions are parents who are keen to learn English so they can help their young ones at home. With skill building and English classes, the can excel at the current jobs or get opportunities to find jobs that will make them financially independent, help support their families and get out of the poverty cycle. We are also involved in income generation and vocational skill building for women.

Most volunteers will be taking group sessions or one to one sessions working independently or in groups. Project staff will be present at all times and resources and guidelines on what to do will be given.

  • Helping women with income generation activities, education, arts and lifeskills
