Your journey begins with a 5 day Yoga Retreat led by Chalani Opatha Zdan in the tranquil location of Khandamodara. Chalani is a person who is full of love and life. She has always been a seeker; she is fun and adventurous. Chalani was born in Taiwan, but she spent most of her childhood in Sri Lanka. Her dream is to share Sri Lanka’s rich culture and the kindness of its people with you through the journey of yoga and self-discovery.

The location of the retreat is situated on a 14 acre property within walking distance to the estuary (Modara) you will find the Wellness Retreat at Kahandamodara. The beach is broad and filled with character, with not a single tourist around. It’s a lovely place to start and end your day. The resort has experimented with a range of resource efficient and environmentally friendly materials and methods. Their biggest success is being totally self-sufficient in electricity needs via solar power – they have gone over their target and now export energy back to the main grid!

They have an onsite orchard with nearly 40 varieties of dry zone trees, a butterfly garden, and a beautiful garden area that is filled with fragrance and joy pilled patches of vegetation.

After you decompress at the retreat and get grounded you will then begin your adventure in Sri Lanka which includes walking and spending plenty of time with the elephants, climbing the rock fortress at Sigiriya, visiting the rock cave temple, learning about traditional Sri Lanka life and culture, staying in the beautiful highlands in Kandy, cycling along village trails, and travelling on the local train. Sri Lanka is a fascinating island of paradise and a destination where a tourist and traveller will come across rich culture, scenic beauty and a variance of locations to explore with a taste culinary cuisine at is best.

CHALANI OPATHA ZDAN 200 YT – Yoga Instructor
Caught up in the repetitions of everyday life, we tend to forget self-love. Chalani found yoga when she was experiencing a strong need to discover and care for herself. She believes yoga is a good reminder of that. The magic of yoga lies in its ability to create opportunities for personal and spiritual growth. Chalani hopes to share that magic with you.
Chalani travelled to India to complete her 200 YT training. She has trained in and practices many styles of yoga, including Vinyasa, Dharma Yoga, Ashtanga, Hatha, Sivatantra Yoga and Moksha Hot Yoga. She continues to pursue her love for yoga and considers improving her practice to be a lifelong pursuit.
Her classes are creative and never boring, and most importantly, non-intimidating. With her non-judgemental approach and passion for teaching, Chalani makes every yogi – from beginner to advance – feel at home. Chalani strongly believes that the universe has its ways of helping everyone to be the person they want to be. She feels that with an open mind, compassion and the desire to continue to pursue our dreams, the the true self will be revealed.

Yoga Retreat Details:

Getting There – Must fly to Columbo International Airport and arrive on January 21, 2018. Since you are travelling across the globe you will have to make some stopovers. Flights from Canada to Sri Lanka range from $1200 – $1500 and Air Canada and Cathay Pacific provide great flight options. Travel Roots can provide assistance in booking your flight.

DAY 01: AIRPORT – COLOMBO - NEGOMBO

Arrive at Colombo airport, assist and welcome with garland. You will be transferred to a hotel in Negombo to get rid of any jetlag. A welcome dinner will be at the back of the lagoon under the stars.

DAY 02: NEGOMBO - KAHANDAMODARA

Breakfast at hotel, after breakfast leave for Kahandamodara where you will stay for next 5 days in your retreat. Back of beyond in Kahandamodara is absolutely one of the most wonderful magical places you can ever visit in Sri Lanka. The calmness of the place leads to the kindness and compassion to nature of your heart. They have gently used the local knowledge to spice up their intention in building the place. There are plenty of spaces in the property to practice yoga. Series of meditation walkways laid in their fruit garden is a beautiful place for a nature lover.

Back of beyond in kahandamodara will be your yoga retreat for 5 days

DAY 08: PINNAWALA

After filling breakfast say good bye to Back of beyond you were treated for last 5 days. Leave for Pinnawala where the famous place village for elephant orphanage. Upon arrival check in at the hotel, the hotel located on the bank of the river help you to calm your mind down feeling relaxed.

After a refreshment visit the elephant orphanage. Here you will witness a few of activities including bathing of elephants in the river and feeding elephants.

After visit orphanage leave for Iperanigama. Pinnawala Iperanigama can be introduced as a replica of traditional folk life of Sri Lanka that was existed during 17 and 18 centuries. This destination shows the prosperous economic system, control system, cultivation, regional and cultural value of the ancient people. Tourist can able to experience lively and engaged to the activities of ancient people in this theme park. This is the place consist with the places that was in ancient village. You can experience lively the traditional village life of ancient people. On completion return to your hotel.

DAY 09: ELEPHANT FREEDOM PROJECT

After breakfast leave for Elephant freedom project.

Engage in full day program in the project

On completion leave for Dambulla for your night stay. Upon arrival check in at the hotel.

DAY 10: SIGIRIYA ROCK FORTRESS – CYCLING IN SIGIRIYA

Breakfast at hotel. After breakfast proceed to the Sigiriya rock fortress, a UNESCO World heritage site, known in English as "Lion Rock," it is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m / 656ft above the jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of a 70-hectare fortified town. A moat, rampart, and extensive gardens ring the base. We will also visit the world-renowned frescoes of the Heavenly Maidens of Sigiriya. The hike will take 2 hours approximately and it is advisable to climb the mountain early in the morning before the sun hits the earth at noon time. Many ancient’s masterpieces of architectural designs can be witnessed in the area. The main part of the walk consists of difficult terrain with a lot of stirs with rocky rooted. There are about 1200 steps to the summit.

Habarana is wonderful village, north central part of the island and Hiriwaduna village located countryside of the Habarana. Hiriwaduna village still non-commercialized area and it is a wonderful place to experience ancient Sri Lankan living style and traditions, local foods and customs.

You will cycle through Hirwaduna Countryside and en-route you will visit to “Chief Farmer’s” house. Chief Farmer and His wife welcome all of you in the traditional way and you can experience locals’ hospitality. Chief Farmers wife offers you traditional snack with Tea. Chief Farmer takes all of you walk in his Chena and you may experience traditional farming methods and customs.

After the walk Chief Farmer’s wife may demonstrate about local foods cooking and you may free to join with her and experience local foods cooking. Chief Farmer and his wife offer local lunch at his house.

Riding distance 12 – 18 Km and 3 - 4 hrs cycling ride

DAY 11: MINNERIVA NATIONAL PARK

Breakfast at hotel. Morning time leaisure at the hotel. You can walk around the hotel or why don’t you talk to the guide and go for a morning walk through the village and agricultural lands.

Afternoon leave for Minneriya & embark on the jeep and commence the jeep safari. Minneriya National park is not only the place where you can see herds of Elephants it is a remarkable place to spot many native birds and some of endemic mammals such as purple faced-langar, Sri Lankan Sambar deer, gray slender loris. You can enjoy your packeted breakfast inside the park, spend few hrs to spot a few of creatures and return to hotel for your night stay.

Transfer from Hotel to Minneriya NP : 45 Minutes – 21 km for the whole day.

DAY 12: MATALE SPICE GARDEN - KANDY

After a hearty breakfast at the hotel, we will transfer to Kandy "the Hill capital of Sri Lanka". En-route we will visit the Matale Spice Garden.

For aeon Sri Lanka has been famous for its spices. At the Matale species garden we will be able to enjoy a hearty lunch made out of fresh organic produce specially grown at the species garden. After lunch we can get a guided tour of the spices garden, giving insight into what each species is used for both for Sri Lankan cuisine and ayurveda.

Kandy holds a special place in the hearts of Sri Lankans and will soon hold one in yours, too. This beautiful lakeside city was the last capital of the native kings before the British conquered the whole island and is also where the sacred tooth relic of Buddha is stored in a magnificent temple complex.

In the afternoon, enjoy a drive around the lake, a stroll through the old town and to wander through the bustling bazaar. We will also drop by an arts and craft center before visiting the jewel in Kandy’s crown, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, the holiest shrine of all for Sri Lankan Buddhists. The tooth relic is ritually cleansed every week by monks and the scented waters they use are considered holy. Apart from the temple, the complex features attractions such as Golden Canopy, the New Palace and the Royal Palace, the old courthouse, the Queen’s Bathing House, the National Museum and the sanctuary.

DAY 13: KANDY

Optional Activity - Cycling in Hanthana Tea Plantation – Explore British footprints (4 - 5 hrs)

Cycling to Kandy, Ceylon Tea Museum is a fascinating ride in Kandy and at the Ceylon Tea Museum you will follow the footsteps of the indomitable pioneer planters. One of the best museums of its kind in the world, visitors could view machinery and objects more than 100 years old. A cup of Pure Ceylon Tea and panoramic view of the mountain ranges and stunning landscape to add to your pleasure…

Built in 1925, the spacious four storied Hantane Tea Factory, had been abandoned for more than a decade when it was earmarked for the Museum Project undertaken by the Sri Lanka Tea Board and the Planters' Association of Ceylon. Today it stands as a proud monument to the success story that is Ceylon Tea and it is one of the best of its kind in the world. Surely this is a fascinating ride, explore how the world best Sri Lanka (Ceylon) tea manufactured and process tea manufacturing.

About Hanthana Cycling Trail

You will start the cycling trail in front of the Ceylon Tea Museum and you will cycle through the Hanthan Tea plantation. It is medium hard level cycling trail and gravel terrain. En-route you can experience Tea picking and Tea planters living style. You will reach to “Galaha Junction” and if you like riding further you can ride up to “Peradaniya Campus” Approx. The distance would be around 55 Km.

DAY 14: COLUMBO - DEPARTURE

After breakfast leave for the airport via Colombo the commercial capital for your departure flight.

Estimated travel time is 3.5 hours (105km).

You will be staying in 3 star accommodation facilities throughout your experience. The rooms are designed to be shared between 2 people and we will pair you up with someone of the same sex. We are also happy to accommodation couples. Single room supplements are available at an additional rate of $650 CAD per person.

Elephant Bay - Located in the heart of Pinnawala, Hotel Elephant Bay is just opposite the famous elephant orphanage. It provides rooms with large private balconies and spectacular views over Ma Oya River. Rooms are bright and airy, with simple décor and furnishings. They feature a flat-screen cable TV, a tea/coffee maker and private bathroom facilities. Guests can enjoy leisurely strolls in the tropical garden or make use of the hotel’s sun terrace. The Elephant Bay Hotel offers bicycle rental facilities for guests’ convenience. Various activities like hiking and fishing are available.

Wewa Addara - Hotel Wewa Addara is situated on the banks of Kayanwala lake Tank which Provides water to the the farmers in the entire area. Access road covers with Paddy fields takes you to the hotel through the waters of the tanks. It is amazing the hotel situated only one and half kilometers away from the main road of Sigiriya Inamaluwa. The hotel provides the views of the Sigiriya rock and the lake to all its rooms. It is an isolated building among the cultivation lands of onions and other small Crops. The facility to meet and associate the local farming crowds is available all over the farming areas surrounded by the hotel. Occational wild elephant could be seen early morning on the other side of the lake.

Hotel Tree of Life - standing tall in its antique splendour, has a glorious history since its conception in the year 1900. Reaching the 100th milestone, Tree Of Life, surrounded by 700 acres of tea plantations at Yahalatenna, recalls the glory days of playing home to the British soldiers who owned the surrounding estate area as well as being the perfect hideout for Lord Mount Barren during the dark period of Second World War.

It has been one of the locations that provided rest houses during the Sinhala Kandyan era, where people from different parts of Sri Lanka visited on their way to hill capital, or during their journey to other parts of the Central province. Situated in an area of great ancient atmosphere, the area not only is valued for its antiquity but also for the treasures hidden beneath the earth such as silicon, amethyst and crystal clear spring water, adding indescribable value to the whole picture combined with values of unearthed surprises, surrounding beauty and the great history.

You will be exposed to a variety of traditional Sri Lankan and international cuisine throughout your experience. All special meal requests and allergies can be accommodated.

Full Board is included during your stay for the Yoga Retreat and you will get 3 healthy meals per day plus 1 daily juice, and unlimited tea and coffee.

Breakfast and dinners are included throughout the adventure tour, and some lunches may be included as mentioned in the itinerary.
