Your Self-Guided Island Hopping Experience: Explore picturesque Stockholm by boat! The Stockholm archipelago is home to approximately 30,000 islands, skerries and rocks that begin just a few minutes away from the city centre of Stockholm. This unique journey takes you off the beaten path to the outskirts of the archipelago to get a taste for the unique culture and natural beauty of the islands. Experience quaint fisherman villages, charming guest-houses, floating saunas, historical sights, and delicious cuisine!

Stockholm Archipelago Island Hopping Highlights:

  • Spend 2 days exploring the city of Stockholm rich in its unique culture and history
  • Visit Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s Old Town where you will explore the winding narrow cobblestone streets and get a feel for how life was hundreds of years ago
  • Visit Stockholms trendy Södermalm and stop for a fika (coffee) at one of the many cafes while exploring the region
  • Stop for a nice lunch in the idyllic archipelago town of Vaxholm home to numerous charming restaurants, cafés, and shops – plus it offers a chance to visit a historic military fortress that was built in 1544 built to protect the capital
  • Spend 2 nights on the island of Grinda – a blissful island in a nature reserve
  • Trigger your tastebuds by experiencing a 3 course meal at the Grinda Wärdshus
  • Kayak or stand up paddle board through the archipelago and stop for a picnic lunch along the shore
  • Experience Sweden’s sauna culture and treat yourself to a sauna – perhaps even the famous floating sauna on Grinda Island

What are Self-Guided Adventures?

Welcome to our Stockholm Archipelago Island Hopping Adventure - a chance to explore the outskirts of the archipelago as a local on your own or with a small group of like-minded individuals without a structured itinerary. You will still enjoy the comforts of having everything planned for you from the moment you arrive, but without a Tour Leader with you throughout the trip. We will arrange your ferry pass, accommodations, and activities (if desired).

What you will get?

When booking one of our self-guided adventures we will equip you with everything you need to have an amazing adventure. You will receive a GPS triggered map that works offline on your smartphone / tablet that has all the points of interest marked as well as a printable travel guide. All you have to do is focus on your adventure and we will arrange your ferry pass, recommended stops along the way, and accommodations.

We provide you with exclusive access to local tips including insider knowledge of the best sights to see, incredible nature & hiking trails, and places to eat. Your daily itineraries will be open to explore as you wish, but we will gladly prearrange special activities and excursions with local guides as needed.

We support small local businesses and our intimate knowledge of each destination will provide you with access to unique experiences including nature-based activities, incredible hiking trails, and off the beaten track gems.  This experience can be tailored for individuals, couples and small groups.

  • 5 Day Ferry Pass – Departs from downtown Stockholm and is a hop on, hop off pass
  • Accommodations at locally owned establishments including:
    • B&B or Boutique Hotel in Stockholm (2 nights)
    • Spend 2 nights at the charming Grinda Wärdshus (guesthouse) which includes a welcome drink and 3 course dinner on the first night
    • Spend 2 nights at the Möja Värdshus (guesthouse) - get a feel for a more rustic island stay on this remote island
  • Delicious breakfasts each morning

The following is our route for a 7 Day Island Hopping trip in the Stockholm Archipelago. Once you have booked we will provide you with all the details you need for your self-guided adventure including how to use your ferry pass, marked points of interest, hiking trails, interesting sights, and places to eat.

Day 1: Arrive in Arlanda - Stockholm's International Airport – Take the Arlanda Express to the city centre where you will have a chance to sample what this incredible city has to offer. Stockholm offers a variety of historic sights, museums, shopping areas, cafes, and delicious cuisine.

Overnight in Stockholm City.

Day 2: Begin your Island Hopping Adventure - Vaxholm to Grinda – Hop on the ferry on route to Vaxholm where you will stop at one of the lovely restaurants for a nice lunch. After lunch wander around the island and get a chance to see the historic military fortress and the museum before hopping back on the ferry to Grinda. Arrive in Grinda just in time to check into your charming guesthouse. You will receive a welcome drink upon arrive and will have a chance to dine at the Grinda Wärdshus with a delicious 3 course meal.

Day 3: Explore the island of Grinda. Grinda is situated on a nature reserve and offers a variety of activities including their famous floating sauna. They offer kayaking and stand up paddle board experiences, light walking trails, restaurants, outdoor games, and beautiful swimming spots.

Day 4: Travel to the island of Möja. After breakfast, hop back on the ferry and head to the remote island of Möja. This island has a completely different feel to it. Feel as though you traveled back in time with its small fishing villages and well-preserved harbours.

Day 5: Full Day Exploring Möja. Slow things down and experience traditional island life. Hike one of the many nature trails on the island and make sure you try the local fish restaurant during your stay.

Day 6: Enjoy a peaceful ferry ride as you travel back to Stockholm. Enjoy the scenic ride back to Stockholm. Upon your arrival enjoy more time exploring the city of Stockholm.
