Your Self-Guided Adventure: Get ready to head to the least travelled part of Iceland the West Fjords! This 9 day journey begins in Reykjavik where you will be spending 2 days exploring this culturally colourful city. You’ll then hit the road and venture North to the Snæfellsnes peninsula to discover volcanoes, lava fields, glaciers, and black sand beaches. Then cruise on intertwining roads through the west fjords continuing north to Ísafjörður with interesting off the beaten path stops along the way.

What are Self-Guided Adventures?

Welcome to our West Iceland Self-Guided Adventure - a chance to explore Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the West Fjords as a local on your own or with a small group of like-minded individuals without a structured itinerary. You will still enjoy the comforts of having everything planned for you from the moment you arrive, but without a Tour Leader with you throughout the trip. We will arrange your car rental, accommodations, and activities (if desired).

What you will get?

When booking one of our self-guided adventures we will equip you with everything you need to have an amazing adventure. You will receive a GPS triggered map that works offline on your smartphone / tablet that has all the points of interest marked as well as a printable travel guide. All you have to do is focus on your adventure and we will arrange your rental car and accommodations.

We provide you with exclusive access to local tips including insider knowledge of the best sights to see, incredible nature & hiking trails, and places to eat. Your daily itineraries will be open to explore as you wish, but we will gladly prearrange special activities and excursions with local guides as needed.

We support small local businesses and our intimate knowledge of each destination will provide you with access to unique experiences including nature-based activities, incredible hiking trails, great places to eat, and off the beaten track gems.  This experience can be tailored for individuals, couples and small groups.

The following is our route for a 9 Day Road Trip throughout Snæfellsnes Peninsula and the West Fjords. Once you have booked we will provide you with all the details you need for your self-guided adventure including marked points of interest, hiking trails, interesting sights, and places to eat.

Day 1: Arrive in Keflavik International Airport - Reykjavik – This city has so much to offer, from an incredible art and music scene, to museums, shopping, the Elf School, and some great city hot pools. Reykjavik is also a great place to take day trips from such as the Golden Circle and the Blue Lagoon.

Day 2: Spend a full day exploring Reykjavik.

Day 3: Reykjavik to Snæfellsnes Peninsula. This scenic peninsula in western Iceland is said to have a special energy. Experience incredible black sand beaches, coastal hiking trails, picturesque fishing villages, incredible scenery, wildlife viewing, and the iconic Snæfellsjökull glacier.

Overnight at a B&B or Guesthouse in Stykkisholmur or surrounding area.

Day 4: Explore Snæfellsnes Peninsula. Continue to explore this fascinating peninsula - try to spot whales and seals and sample in an Icelandic delicacy fermented shark at the nearby Shark Museum.

Day 5: Take Ferry to the West Fjords and head to Patreskfjordur. Experience the ferry that crosses the sea and connects you to the wild west fjords. This region receives only 10% of the visitors that come to Iceland, so you are in for an off the beaten path treat.

Day 6: Travel in and out of the fjords and head to Ísafjörður. The town has an interesting arts and culture scene, as well as a strong history as a thriving fishing port. Plus is has one of the best seafood restaurants in the world!

Day 7: Full Day exploring Ísafjörður and surrounding area.

Day 8: Start heading back to Reykjavik - stay in a quaint farm-stay in the countryside.  This provides you with an opportunity to the beautiful farms and scenery of interior Iceland. You will also pass by interesting hot pools and museums. You will end up staying in a quaint farmstay situated in the countryside.

Day 9: Depart back to Keflavik International Airport.
