This experience allows you to engage with local communities in Soweto and to become an active participant in meaningful community development work with vulnerable children, those affected by HIV, the elderly or at a school for deaf children. Phaphama Initiatives also supports workshops related to conflict transformation, conflict resolution, gender reconciliation, as well as peace projects in schools and jails. Phaphama may be able to organize volunteer experiences focusing on other fields of interest through its partners.

Dates and itineraries are flexible over the whole year to suit the needs of the group. It is recommended to spend at least 3 weeks working in the community, however any duration of stay can be accommodated.

Cooking and cleaning
Administrative systems support
Maintenance work and gardening

Optional extras:

Tour of Soweto and Johannesburg

Participate with local participants in a two-day workshop on community conversations / social cohesion (based on the international Alternatives to Violence Project) or gender reconciliation

Theatre or sports excursions

Learn to do African drumming or traditional gumboot dancing

Excursions to other sites of interest in South Africa, for example, a game park

Homestay accommodation with local families.
